Saint Cyril of Alexandria’s Story
Saints are not born with halos around their heads. Cyril, recognized as a great teacher of the Church, began his career as archbishop of Alexandria, Egypt, with impulsive, often violent, actions. He pillaged and closed the churches of the Novatian heretics—who required those who denied the faith to be re-baptized—participated in the deposing of Saint John Chrysostom, and confiscated Jewish property, expelling the Jews from Alexandria in retaliation for their attacks on Christians.
Cyril’s importance for theology and Church history lies in his championing the cause of orthodoxy against the heresy of Nestorius, who taught that in Christ there were two persons, one human and one divine.
The controversy centered around the two natures in Christ. Nestorius would not agree to the title “God-bearer” for Mary. He preferred “Christ-bearer,” saying there are two distinct persons in Christ—divine and human—joined only by a moral union. He said Mary was not the mother of God but only of the man Christ, whose humanity was only a temple of God. Nestorianism implied that the humanity of Christ was a mere disguise.
Presiding as the pope’s representative at the Council of Ephesus in 431, Cyril condemned Nestorianism and proclaimed Mary truly the “God-bearer”—the mother of the one Person who is truly God and truly human. In the confusion that followed, Cyril was deposed and imprisoned for three months, after which he was welcomed back to Alexandria.
Besides needing to soften some of his opposition to those who had sided with Nestorius, Cyril had difficulties with some of his own allies, who thought he had gone too far, sacrificing not only language but orthodoxy. Until his death, his policy of moderation kept his extreme partisans under control. On his deathbed, despite pressure, he refused to condemn the teacher of Nestorius.
Reflection
Lives of the saints are valuable not only for the virtue they reveal but also for the less admirable qualities that also appear. Holiness is a gift of God to us as human beings. Life is a process. We respond to God’s gift, but sometimes with a lot of zigzagging. If Cyril had been more patient and diplomatic, the Nestorian church might not have risen and maintained power so long. But even saints must grow out of immaturity, narrowness, and selfishness. It is because they—and we—do grow, that we are truly saints, persons who live the life of God. Reading I
Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
Isaac grew, and on the day of the child’s weaning
Abraham held a great feast.
Sarah noticed the son whom Hagar the Egyptian
had borne to Abraham
playing with her son Isaac;
so she demanded of Abraham:
“Drive out that slave and her son!
No son of that slave is going to share the inheritance
with my son Isaac!”
Abraham was greatly distressed,
especially on account of his son Ishmael.
But God said to Abraham: “Do not be distressed about the boy
or about your slave woman.
Heed the demands of Sarah, no matter what she is asking of you;
for it is through Isaac that descendants shall bear your name.
As for the son of the slave woman,
I will make a great nation of him also,
since he too is your offspring.”
Early the next morning Abraham got some bread and a skin of water
and gave them to Hagar.
Then, placing the child on her back, he sent her away.
As she roamed aimlessly in the wilderness of Beer-sheba,
the water in the skin was used up.
So she put the child down under a shrub,
and then went and sat down opposite him, about a bowshot away;
for she said to herself, “Let me not watch to see the child die.”
As she sat opposite Ishmael, he began to cry.
God heard the boy’s cry,
and God’s messenger called to Hagar from heaven:
“What is the matter, Hagar?
Don’t be afraid; God has heard the boy’s cry in this plight of his.
Arise, lift up the boy and hold him by the hand;
for I will make of him a great nation.”
Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water.
She went and filled the skin with water, and then let the boy drink.
God was with the boy as he grew up.

When Jesus came to the territory of the Gadarenes,
two demoniacs who were coming from the tombs met him.
They were so savage that no one could travel by that road.
They cried out, “What have you to do with us, Son of God?
Have you come here to torment us before the appointed time?”
Some distance away a herd of many swine was feeding.
The demons pleaded with him,
“If you drive us out, send us into the herd of swine.”
And he said to them, “Go then!”
They came out and entered the swine,
and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea
where they drowned.
The swineherds ran away,
and when they came to the town they reported everything,
including what had happened to the demoniacs.
Thereupon the whole town came out to meet Jesus,
and when they saw him they begged him to leave their district.

Bunda Maria mempunyai saudara sepupu bernama Elisabeth yang bersuamikan Zakaria, seorang imam di Bait Allah Yerusalem. Pasangan ini belum memiliki keturunan karena Elisabet adalah seorang wanita mandul. Suatu hari Zakaria tengah bertugas membakar kemenyan di Bait Allah. Tiba-tiba Malaikat Gabriel menampakkan diri padanya dan membawa kabar bahwa Tuhan akan mengaruniakan seorang anak laki-laki baginya. Anak tersebut kelak akan menyiapkan umat Israel menyambut kedatangan Sang Mesias.
Tetapi Zakaria masih kurang percaya karena Elisabeth sudah tua dan mandul. Atas ketidak-percayaannya, zakaria mendapat hukuman Tuhan dan menjadi bisu sampai kelahiran anaknya yang diberi nama Yohanes, sesuai pesan Malaikat Gabriel.
Yohanes adalah utusan Allah yang mendahului Yesus. Yesus sendiri mengatakan :
Masa kecil Yohanes tidak banyak diceritakan, kecuali ketika masih dalam kandungan ia melonjak kegirangan sewaktu Bunda Maria berkunjung ke rumah ibunya (Luk 1 : 41), dan kelahirannya (Luk 1 : 57 - 66).
Setelah dewasa, Yohanes muncul sebagai seorang pengkotbah di tepi sungai Yordan dengan pesan yang mendesak : “Bertobatlah, sebab Kerajaan Allah sudah dekat!” (Mat 3:2)
Orang-orang kemudian datang dan dibabtis oleh Yohanes di sungai Yordan. Ketika orang menanyakan dirinya, Yohanes menjawab :
Pengikut Yohanes banyak sekali, termasuk orang-orang yang kemudian di pilih Yesus menjadi RasulNya. Yesus sendiri datang minta dibaptis olehnya. Yohanes mulanya menolak dengan berkata :
Namun Yesus meyakinkankannya :
Tak lama kemudian Yohanes dipenjarakan, karena mengecam pernikahan raja Herodes Antipas dengan Herodias, istri saudara sepupunya. Dari dalam penjara Yohanes mengikuti gerakan Yesus melalui murid-muridnya yang dengan setia mengunjunginya. Yohanes akhirnya dipenggal Herodes Antipas akibat akal busuk dari Herodias dan puterinya Salome. Pelopor Yesus ini gugur demi membela kesusilaan.
Kemartiran Yohanes Pembaptis dapat dibaca dalam kitab suci (Matius 14 :1 – 12).

Yohanes Berasal dari nama Yunani Ιωαννης (Ioannes), yang aslinya berasal dari nama Ibrani יוֹחָנָן (Yochanan) yang berarti "YAHWEH Maha pengasih", "Allah Maha Baik"

Cosicché non guardiamo più nessuno alla maniera umana; se anche abbiamo conosciuto Cristo alla maniera umana, ora non lo conosciamo più così. Tanto che, se uno è in Cristo, è una nuova creatura; le cose vecchie sono passate; ecco, ne sono nate di nuove.

Chi è costui, che anche il vento e il mare gli obbediscono?
Dal Vangelo secondo Marco
(Mc 4, 35-41)
In quel tempo, venuta la sera, Gesù disse ai suoi discepoli: «Passiamo all’altra riva». E, congedata la folla, lo presero con sé, così com’era, nella barca. C’erano anche altre barche con lui.
Ci fu una grande tempesta di vento e le onde si rovesciavano nella barca, tanto che ormai era piena. Egli se ne stava a poppa, sul cuscino, e dormiva. Allora lo svegliarono e gli dissero: «Maestro, non t’importa che siamo perduti?».
Si destò, minacciò il vento e disse al mare: «Taci, calmati!». Il vento cessò e ci fu grande bonaccia. Poi disse loro: «Perché avete paura? Non avete ancora fede?».
E furono presi da grande timore e si dicevano l’un l’altro: «Chi è dunque costui, che anche il vento e il mare gli obbediscono?».

Saint of the Day for June 18(May 2, 1856 – June 7, 1925)Venerable Matt Talbot’s storyMatt can be considered the patron of men and women struggling with alcoholism. He was born in Dublin, where his father worked on the docks and had a difficult time supporting his family. After a few years of schooling, Matt obtained work as a messenger for some liquor merchants; there he began to drink excessively. For 15 years—until he was almost 30—Matt was an active alcoholic.One day he decided to take “the pledge” for three months, make a general confession and begin to attend daily Mass. There is evidence that Matt’s first seven years after taking the pledge were especially difficult. Avoiding his former drinking places was hard. He began to pray as intensely as he used to drink. He also tried to pay back people from whom he had borrowed or stolen money while he was drinking.Most of his life Matt worked as a builder’s laborer. He joined the Secular Franciscan Order and began a life of strict penance; he abstained from meat nine months a year. Matt spent hours every night avidly reading Scripture and the lives of the saints. He prayed the rosary conscientiously. Though his job did not make him rich, Matt contributed generously to the missions.After 1923, Matt's health failed, and he was forced to quit work. He died on his way to church on Trinity Sunday. Fifty years later, Pope Paul VI gave Matt Talbot the title venerable. His liturgical feast is celebrated on June 19.ReflectionIn looking at the life of Matt Talbot, we may easily focus on the later years when he had stopped drinking for some time and was leading a penitential life. Only alcoholic men and women who have stopped drinking can fully appreciate how difficult the earliest years of sobriety were for Matt.He had to take one day at a time. Reading I
Brothers and sisters:
Since many boast according to the flesh, I too will boast.
To my shame I say that we were too weak!
But what anyone dares to boast of
(I am speaking in foolishness)
I also dare.
Are they Hebrews? So am I.
Are they children of Israel? So am I.
Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I.
Are they ministers of Christ?
(I am talking like an insane person).
I am still more, with far greater labors,
far more imprisonments, far worse beatings,
and numerous brushes with death.
Five times at the hands of the Jews
I received forty lashes minus one.
Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned,
three times I was shipwrecked,
I passed a night and a day on the deep;
on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers,
dangers from robbers, dangers from my own race,
dangers from Gentiles, dangers in the city,
dangers in the wilderness, dangers at sea,
dangers among false brothers;
in toil and hardship, through many sleepless nights,
through hunger and thirst, through frequent fastings,
through cold and exposure.
And apart from these things, there is the daily pressure upon me
of my anxiety for all the churches.
Who is weak, and I am not weak?
Who is led to sin, and I am not indignant?
If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.
